Internship Programme

About the programme

The AESC Internship programme was established in 2017 to enable the student to get involved in academic research. The student interns take part in an extensive range of research tasks, including event planning and coordination, stakeholder liaison, office administration, research interviews, desktop research, data analysis, and report writing. Students can gain more experiences to supplement their academic studies and expand their skillset through this internship. This program creates a win-win situation that benefits the study career of students and AESC research.

Objectives

AESC Internship programme aims to enhance students’ experiences in the following aspects:

  • Enriching students’ understanding of the energy, sustainability, and environmental issues in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, China, East Asia, and the global context;
  • Expanding students’ learning experiences by offering an academically enriching environment;
  • Engaging students to participate in community capacity-building and other experiential learning activities;
  • Boosting students’ research, problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills;
  • Enhancing students’ confidence and discipline; and
  • Cultivating research interests among students.

Background

AESC recruits student interns in the following three methods:

1) AESC Internship programme, which recruits student interns from the energy courses in the Department of Geography, Hong Kong Baptist University, and through collaborating parties of Asian Energy Studies Centre

2) Social Science Internship offered by Faculty of Social Sciences (SOSC), Hong Kong Baptist University

3) Division of Applied Science Summer Internship Programme offered by College of International Education (CIE), Hong Kong Baptist University

(1) AESC Internship programme
– Non-credit bearing programme directly offered by Asian Energy Studies Centre
– Offered throughout the year
– At least 200 hours of internship training

(2) Social Science Internship (SSI)
– Credit bearing programme
– Via research attachment opportunities OR Social Sciences Experiential Learning in Action
– Offered throughout the year
– At least 200 hours of internship training

(3) Division of Applied Science Summer Internship Programme
– Credit bearing programme
– Offered in summer period
– 320 hours or under mutual agreement between mutual agreement between the student interns and the internship organization

Responsibilities

  • Assist in conducting qualitative and quantitative research, including, but not limited to, literature review, drafting preliminary academic papers, research reports
  • Assist in our outreach events such as workshops and enabled them to exchange with different academic specialists, also strengthening the center’s partnerships with local and international NGOs, businesses, government agencies, community groups, and fellow researchers
  • Assist in managing workflow and liaise with team members and external collaborators to ensuring the meeting of key project milestones
  • Assist in administering, plan, and publicise for events such as conferences, workshops, and seminars
  • Handle administrative tasks and liaise with internal and external parties

Requirements

  • Full-time undergraduate with a major preferably in geography, energy studies, environmental studies, or related social science disciplines from a local recognised education institution
  • Enthusiastic in learning about qualitative and quantitative research skills
  • Have an outgoing personality and passionate in communicating with community
  • Committed to learn more about energy and environmental issues
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including fluency in Cantonese) are needed
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Student should be self-motivated, responsive, conscientious, able to work independently and under pressure
